When we first dreamt about our Designer Spotlight series, the two leading ladies of  SmithErickson Designs were some of the first designers that came to mind! Their casual, yet sophisticated style lends itself well to so many homeowners, and thankfully for CF Interiors, we have a range of vendors for them to choose from!

SmithErickson continues to see tremendous growth in projects and on Instagram, with their beautifully curated feed, and, most recently, their engaging reels that take you through their completed projects. The ladies of SED took time to catch up with us, and they definitely had a lot to say.

Take us back to where it all began - tell us a little about your background and what brought you to start your design firm.

Both born and raised Calgarians, we’ve always had a passion for design and working with people. Working in the building industry together for many years brought us to the realization that we could team up and combine our design talents to create a flourishing boutique interior design firm.

How would you describe your design style and aesthetic? If you have a few different styles, what’s your favourite style?

Our design style can be described as tailored casual. We appreciate hints of traditional design styles infused with more light and airy aspects of contemporary design. Overall, we bring a timeless approach to all of our designs so that they stand the test of time.

Where do you look for inspiration?

We draw inspiration from art, fashion and travel, mostly. We’re also inspired by the many design talents that surround us.

Are there any upcoming design trends you’re looking forward to? Which design movement is, to you, the most timeless?

We’re starting to see the design trend of mixed materials in furniture, and are especially drawn to the combination of jewel tone velvets with natural woods. In terms of design movements, Art Deco mixed with Minimalism are, to us, the most timeless. It’s all about blending design styles to create a layered, cohesive look.

What do you love most about being part of the design community?

Being around like-mind people with similar drive and passion - there is such great support within the design community here in Calgary!

If you could share one key design tip to really make a house feel like a home, what would it be?

Incorporate pieces into your home that you love and tell a story, design is about feeling not just aesthetic.

We’ve all had to do some adjusting over the last year and a half. What challenges have you faced over this period, and how did you manage to pivot? Any key learnings you'd like to share?

Initially, it was a challenge meeting with clients and communicating our vision for spaces virtually, but we have now figured out a great process for virtual design and are reaching more people in farther places, which has been a wonderful upside!
